It's been just over a year since AlphaGo, the Google/Deepmind artificial intelligence program, beat a champion player at the complex board game Go. The win followed years of slow progress in the development of AI, and marked a turning point in the technology that has prompted equal measures of hype and paranoia.

A McKinsey Global Institute report says AI is contributing to a transformation of society “happening ten times faster and at 300 times the scale, or roughly 3,000 times the impact” of the Industrial Revolution. According to CB Insights, funding deals for AI startups increased 4.6x in the last five years, from 150 in 2012 to 698 in 2016.

Andrew Ng, a leading researcher in AI, has said, “Just as electricity transformed almost everything 100 years ago, today I actually have a hard time thinking of an industry that I don’t think AI will transform in the next several years.”

While many see opportunity, others see potential risk: of major job losses, of decreased privacy, and worse — the creation of computer overlords, or "summoning the demon," as Elon Musk has said. What do we need to know to be prepared for a future with AI? This WiTT panel discussion will provide an overview of the current state of play and trends in AI, and will aim to separate the myth from the reality.

WiTT board director Michelle Senecal will lead our panel. We are delighted to announce that she will be joined by:

  • Sarah Burnett, Chair of BCSWomen, Vice President of Research at Everest Group and one of Computer Weekly’s top 50 influential women in IT;
  • Oana Korda, Co-founder & Director of Product, Woogie; and
  • Clara Durodié, Founder and Managing Partner, Cognitive Finance Group.
  • Other speakers will be announced soon.

The evening will run as follows:

6:00-7:00pm: drinks & networking

7:00-8:00pm: panel discussion followed by Q&A

8:15: wrap-up and more networking.
