In 2017, the prediction that AI and robots will transform a number of industrial sectors from health and social care to automotive, logistics and manufacturing.is on the cusp of becoming commercial reality, and the impact will soon become evident. As a result a range of new legal and ethical questions are bound to arise as to civil and criminal liability for actions taken by robots, ownership of intellectual property in works created by them, data privacy and security, taxation and insurance. The European Union is considering the possible form and content of a comprehensive regulatory regime for robots, including a controversial proposal to introduce a specific legal status for robots, so that at least the most sophisticated autonomous robots could have the status of electronic persons with specific rights and obligations.
In this seminar, we will review the potential legal and commercial impact of the proposed European regulatory regime and the extent to which it should affect robotics researchers, manufacturers and users.
